LONDON CHILD NEUROLOGY

What to Expect

Coming to see a neurologist can feel daunting for children and parents. Knowing what will happen usually helps.

Before the appointment

Please bring any letters, test results and a list of current medicines. If your child has episodes or unusual movements, a short video on your phone is often one of the most helpful things you can bring.

During the consultation

We will talk through your child's symptoms, health and development, and what you and your child are most worried about. A gentle neurological examination follows, adapted to your child's age; for younger children much of it is done through play.

There will be time to discuss what the findings may mean and to ask questions.

Tests

Many children do not need tests. When they are helpful, they may include blood tests, an EEG (recording of brain activity) or an MRI scan. The reasons for any test will be explained before it is arranged.

After the appointment

You will receive a written summary of the consultation and the agreed plan. With your permission, a copy is also sent to your child's GP or referring doctor.
